I’m Charlie, a soul/RnB/jazz singer and song writer. I grew up writing RnB and HipHop songs two genres I love but over the years my music developed a sound I can only describe as sultry Jazz. I was born and raised in Birmingham since 1993 in a small terraced house where I lived with my Father, 3 Brothers and 2 sisters.
To be very honest with you, I do not know exactly who I am yet. But I have convinced myself that actually – this is OK. As we speak I am balancing two very different lives. In one I am a student studying Veterinary Medicine at University AND in the other I am Jazzy – an artist, a jazz singer, a song writer and someone who just doesn’t want to die knowing I never lived – so I take risks and try not to regret them.
Music is important to me. I pay deep homage to Dusty Springfield, Amy Winehouse, Cleo lane, Beyoncé, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Duffy and Adele. All artists amongst many others who made me feel a part of something greater than myself when listening to them.
I began trying to harness the power of music for myself around 7yrs, I remember specifically trying to write songs that would make people cry amongst other things – Not necessarily (although I do not rule out) sadistically, I just wanted to simplify the ‘sad’ feeling I knew many people around me felt. I’d write song after song like a crazy child. I could write whatever I wanted, about who ever I wanted, where ever I wanted. It felt so good putting things down in words. It was freeing and had no boundaries and soon enough I kept lyric book, bought a guitar and a keyboard.
Still though I am only 18 and I am learning which is why I decided to join Talent 2011. I came to have fun. I came to perform. I came to learn and meet new people and In the future I intend to blow the dust off my lyric book and make you an album.
“Performance remedied me because the stage for me reflected life. Every day you will be judged”
